About 5000 members of the Democratic Nursing Association of SA (Denosa) threatened to strike after a wage dispute resolution with Netcare failed, the union said on Friday.
We are mobilising our members... If Netcare doesn't come to the party between now and Monday, we will serve them with our intention to strike," said spokesman Asanda Fongqo.
"The dispute resolution process at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has failed to resolve the current wage impasse," he said.
Denosa members protesting in Bisho, Eastern Cape where 95% of the ANC get their support.
The failed process brought to an end three months of negotiations between the union and Netcare, with the employer placing a final offer of 7.75 percent on the table.
Fongqo said Denosa was still open to negotiating a better offer, but was waiting for Netcare to deliver.
Denosa has demanded an 11-percent increase across the board, improved allowances and the opportunity to renegotiate new contract terms next year.
The union was granted a certificate to strike by the CCMA on Wednesday.
"Netcare has demonstrated an enormous amount of arrogance... even threatening not to backdate if we do not sign their offensive offer before today," Fongqo said.
"They should therefore take full responsibility of the effects of the looming industrial action."
Netcare was preparing to issue comment later on Friday.
